Is this an official school closure notice?
No. The result is a planning estimate based on forecast data and broad local settings. Only a school district or authorized school official can announce a closure, delay, transportation cancellation or remote-learning day.
How does the snow day calculator make a prediction?
It combines live forecast snowfall, a cautious ice signal, temperature, wind chill and morning timing with broad area and school settings. Each factor has a published weight, and the result shows the full breakdown.
Can I search by ZIP or postal code?
Yes. The location search accepts city names and many US ZIP or Canadian postal codes. Adding a state, province or country helps when several places share a name.
Does the calculator work in Canada and show metric units?
Yes. Canadian city and postal-code searches are supported. The display automatically favors Celsius, centimetres and kilometres per hour for a Canadian match, and you can switch between metric and U.S. units at any time without changing the estimate.
When is the best time to check?
Check once in the evening to prepare, then refresh early in the morning when the forecast and observed conditions are closer to the district decision window.
How accurate is the result?
There is no honest universal accuracy percentage for every district. Weather forecasts change, and public tools cannot observe every road, bus, building or staffing issue. Use the estimate to prepare, not to replace an official notice.
Where does the weather data come from?
The browser requests location and forecast data from Open-Meteo. The variables include daily and hourly snowfall, precipitation, temperature and wind. For supported U.S. locations, it separately checks the National Weather Service for active winter alerts.
What does the hourly storm timing panel show?
It groups forecast snowfall into the previous evening, overnight, morning bus window and school hours. The panel helps explain why snow near transportation time can matter more than the same amount later in the day.
Why did the percentage change?
Weather models update as new observations arrive. A storm-track or precipitation-type change can alter snow, ice and timing inputs, so a responsible estimate should change with the forecast.
Why can nearby school districts make different decisions?
Districts may have different bus routes, hills, road treatment, building conditions, staffing and weather policies. A single regional forecast does not remove those local differences.
Does an NWS warning mean school will close?
Not automatically. A warning describes a significant weather hazard. The calculator shows relevant active NWS alerts separately and does not add them to the percentage. The school district decides how that hazard affects its own transportation and operations.
Does the site store my location?
The website does not require an account and does not maintain its own database of searches. Location requests go from the browser to the forecast provider and, for supported U.S. alert checks, the National Weather Service. Hosting logs and configured advertising may still process technical information as described in the privacy policy.
Can the calculator predict delays and remote learning?
The percentage represents broad physical closure pressure. A district may respond with a delay, transportation cancellation, early dismissal, remote instruction or a full closure according to local policy.
Is the calculator free?
