A two-hour school delay means the school starts later; a snow day usually means the regular in-person school day is cancelled. A bus cancellation can leave schools open, and a building closure can still require remote work. The complete district announcement tells you which outcome applies.
Can a calculator predict a two-hour delay?
Our snow day calculator shows a weather-based closure-pressure score and hourly storm timing. It does not calculate a separate probability for a two-hour delay, bus cancellation or early dismissal. A middle-range result cannot be translated into a delay: school policies and road conditions still determine the operating decision.
What each school status means
| Status | Meaning | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Two-hour delay | A later opening rather than a full-day cancellation. | Start time, bus pickup, breakfast, preschool and before-school care. |
| Snow day / school cancellation | Regular in-person classes are cancelled for the affected schools. | Remote assignments, childcare, activities and whether staff must report. |
| Bus cancellation | The specified transportation service is not running. | Whether buildings stay open, the affected routes and the return trip. |
| Remote-learning day | Instruction or assignments continue away from the building. | Attendance, login times and access to learning materials. |
Why storm timing can favor a delay
A delayed opening gives crews extra time when conditions may improve before a later commute. Snow continuing through the morning can make that option less practical. Timing alone does not decide the outcome: the school also needs usable roads, buses and buildings.
Hanover Public Schools in Massachusetts illustrates this distinction in its published winter procedures. It describes an early-ending storm with extra clearing time as a situation more suited to a delay, and continued morning accumulation as more suited to cancellation. This is one district's guidance, not a national rule.
In the calculator, compare the overnight snow with the 5–9 a.m. bus-window total and the school-hours forecast. Snow ending before the bus window tells a different story from snow intensifying during it. Those forecast windows do not observe plowing progress or your route. Read how the timing factor works before treating it as a schedule prediction.
How much snow does it take to cancel school?
There is no snowfall cutoff that applies to every school. A forecast total cannot account for hills, untreated roads, ice, visibility, or the time available to clear bus routes. Your district's published policy, when it provides a threshold, applies locally. The regional snow-day guide explains why the same accumulation can lead to different decisions.
Does no bus mean no school in Canada?
Not automatically. Toronto District School Board explains that schools can remain open when buses are cancelled because most of its students do not use school buses. Other boards can have different policies and transportation zones. Check both the board's school notice and the relevant transportation service rather than applying Toronto's rule to another community.
Our Canada snow day calculator supports city and postal-code searches with metric weather values. It cannot verify a board closure or a particular bus route's status.
How to check a possible delay tomorrow
- Check tomorrow's forecast in the evening and note whether the heaviest weather overlaps the commute.
- Find your district's official weather-notice page or notification system before the morning rush.
- Read the date, school names, delay length and transportation details in the full announcement.
- Confirm childcare, preschool and activities separately; they may follow a different schedule.
- Refresh official channels before leaving, because an initial delay may be revised.
Follow the evening-and-morning checking routine and prepare a backup plan. Until the school announces a change, a forecast score is a reason to monitor conditions rather than a confirmed delay or permission to miss class.
